U.S. St. Stephen's Land Office - powers of attorney, 1821-1834.

The Relief Act of 1821 allowed a debtor to give up or relinquish part of his land to complete payment on the rest or to extend the time of credit. This series consists of powers of attorney in which a purchaser authorized another individual to act on his behalf to obtain the benefits of the act. The power of attorney contains the name and county of residence of the purchaser, the name of the designated attorney, the date and the signatures of the purchaser and witnesses. These records document are aspect of the administration of the Relief Act of 1821.
